ok...so for a possible fit for a trade, how about a guy like Prospal (for a third tenure with the Flyers). He is on a Columbus team who is going to rebuild under a new GM and could be looking to unload some of its players for modest returns, esp in Prospals case.

Prospal had some nice chemistry with Briere when he came here in 08 and "could" duplicate that, though he is more of a playmaker and we look like we need a finisher right now, not saying it wouldnt be a bad fit. The only downside is the salary that he carries 2.5M which I am not sure at this point what his cut back and YTD offset would be.

I also believe we are at the 50 contract limit so someone would most likely have to go the other way....

Thoughts?

So we're gonna finally bring BOB RYAB HOME?

Good analysis of how a trade works, Bill. People don't seem to understand that if a GM shows his cards, he's basically asking to be bent over a chair in a deal. I do hope Holmgren is being honest when he says he's not splitting up the young core he's assembled.

As the season goes on, we will see if the four needs you mention get addressed. I think that the hardest one will be the first one, especially with the Karlsson injury, the Sens may be active in trying to land a good puck mover and if they're desperate enough, it could set the prices even higher.

Of course, considering Ottawa is now missing both Spezza and Karlsson, perhaps they would be more willing to trade a rental like Sergei Gonchar.

Great blog Bill. I think you almost have to stick Briere on that top line because the idea of having him on a line that is supposed to be for "shutdown" purposes scares me to death.

4) The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Other teams' defensemen turn pucks over, too, and sometimes get caught out of position. Forwards on other teams also experience scoring slumps.

Oh Bill, do you actually read what you write? Next are you going to try to tell us that other teams' goalies let in bad goals from time to time?

The Flyers do have an open contract slot, since Laughton was sent back to Oshawa.

Despite the chemistry shown by Prospal and Briere, Vinny doesn't really address any real need. Granted he could allow Briere to be more of a sniper, but combining Giroux and Briere produced poor results and Giroux's a better playmaker than Vinny.

The best asset Prospal brings, IMO, is veteran presence.

Danny Briere is unwittingly in the middle of some not-so-enviable lineup dilemmas for Peter Laviolette right now.

This seems to have been the case for the last few years, dating back to when Richards and Carter were around and Giroux was still emerging.

Any thoughts on letting Couturier play wing on a line centered by Briere?

problem is that PHI has nothing much of value to other teams that they are WILLING to part with

I wouldn't do it. Couturier is a good defensive center. Let him play there.

I think Paul Gaustad is a guy the Flyers could greatly benefit from. He is a huge, stereotypical 4th line center. Winning 60+% of his faceoffs right now.. chips in around 10-11 goals a season, and can plays 15 minutes a night. Dont think the Preds would trade him (to us especially), but thats the kind of player I would like to see them add.

I think, for the right player, the Flyers would part with Brayden Schenn.

It would be great if they had another player who could win 55%+ of their faceoffs. Talbot, Couturier and Schenn are struggling with them this year, and Briere & Rusty have been awful in their limited attempts.

I think they'd be willing to move Brayden Schenn.

fisticuffs...I dont see any major trades other than the usual 2nd rounder traded for the over 30 Dman homer loves. hopefully, they draft Jones and sign a duck forward

I'd aim a little lower at a guy like Dave Steckel in Toronto. Could probably be had for a mid-to-late round pick, provides stability at the 4C spot and take a little off the shoulders of Giroux on the PK.

I hope not. Would have to be a stud, puck-moving defenseman coming back the other way, imo.

That's basically the only thing I could see them being willing to move him for.

Don't like his cap hit or the likely trade cost, but, yeah, Goose would fit well

No, Nashville's management are probably still feeling a little sore about being forced to pay Weber $14 million this year (pro-rated). Especially since he has one assist and no goals in 13 games so far.

Unfortunately, Gaustad doesn't look like he'll be going anywhere. He would be great on this team.

Same style player... he isnt as fierce as Goose, but fits the same mold. Id be on board.

Scary stat of the day: Faceoff %
Talbot: 46.7
Couts: 43.8
Schenn: 40.4
Briere: 25.0

EDIT: Steckle hasnt faired so well this year, and has only dressed in 5 games.. idk bout him.

Tangradi for a 7th, Ponikarovsky for a 4th and 7th, Ellerby for a 5th, Loktionov for a 5th, Lovejoy for a 5th. We could get a HAUL for a 2nd.

The Flyers have surprised me so far. I thought they would have more wins and be scoring more.

A few of you mentioned you thought they might be willing to part with Brayden Schenn.

That surprises me.

I don't get to see many Flyer games. How has Simmonds looked so far?
